Southern Cross Brightside Hospital is one of the newest hospitals in New Zealand.
Established originally on its central Auckland (Epsom) site in the 1940s, the hospital was completely rebuilt to modern, high tech specifications, and officially re-opened in 2000. Brightside is a four-theatre hospital, providing 53 in-patient beds, and has a staff of around 60.
Surgery undertaken includes orthopaedics, urological, gynaecological, plastics, oral, ear nose and throat and general surgery. The hospital is best known for its gynaecological, orthopaedics and urological care which, in some instances, has led the way in New Zealand. For example, Brightside was the first hospital in New Zealand to offer Brachytherapy, a new type of treatment for some people with prostate cancer.
